SUBTITLE- RICHMOND, VA. FADE INTO: The Richmond SPCA, a nonprofit, no-kill humane society in Richmond, Virginia. They stand for the principle that every life is precious by: Saving the lives of about 4,000 homeless dogs, cats, kittens and puppies each year by transferring them into our care primarily from shelters all over Virginia where their lives are at risk without us.
[Camera views move from outside the building to inside the building]
Woman’s voice: We provide extensive veterinary medical treatment and behavioral rehabilitation to the vast majority of the dogs and cats in our shelter because they come to us with significant veterinary medical issues and/or behavioral challenges. Each year roughly 4,000 homeless pets are adopted into loving, lasting homes.
PRS: And what if I come across a “Wild Dog” you could say and want to keep him?
Woman: Well, that’s complicated. How “wild” would you say he is?
PRS: It’s complicated. I know only bits and pieces from his life. I know that he severely damaged. He lashes out at everyone that comes into contact with him. It is only recently that he has taken affection to a young woman that is not my friend or neighbor.
Woman: Mr. Stanton, for someone that has as much as you do, what would drive you to keep such an animal? I mean, you could get a puppy from birth that’s trainable and only knows you. You are taking on a daunting task.
PRS: (Pauses) Yes. A daunting task indeed. However, I feel that I would not find in other dogs the skills that I would need that this dog has. You see, I want this dog because I want to train its rage. I want to hone it – making it something more than what it is. I want this dog to one day guard my house, my family. I want this dog to be the best – a champion so to speak, the show dog of show dogs.
Woman: Wow, you speak with so much passion it’s very different from what I’ve heard about you.
PRS: And what have you heard?
Woman: That you’re abusive. That you beat clients and scare those who owe debts to you. That your company is made from blood money. I heard one time you faced your finacee for a wrestling title and beat her just to win it. You were a champion but lost the one thing you loved. I heard that you pushed an old lady out the way in a crosswalk late for a meeting. Richmond speaks with great darkness about you Mr. Stanton. If we were in London you’d just be a Vagrant with money.
(Ricky cracks his neck and smiles)
PRS: If I remember right, the Stanton Foundation gave you all $500,000 to assist with funding Officers to fight against the dogfighting rings in the area?
(The woman looks down at the floor.) Woman: Yes, and we’re grateful….Ummm….the Recovery Wing is over here….)
(The two walk down a loud hallway as dogs of all sorts are barking)
Woman: These are those dogs you speak of. Does he resemble anything you see here?
(Ricky looks around and nods) PRS: His attitude is very much like these. Ready to snap at anyone, loud, defensive, he’s all these things.
Woman: Then you will need to do the one thing that many people do not think you can do Mr. Stanton.
PRS: And what’s that?
Woman: Be loving. Be kind. Be patient.
PRS: These are virtues that I have.
Woman: (smiles) I’m sure you do Sir.
PRS: You do not believe me?
(The woman puts her hair in a quick bun with her pencil and walks close to Stanton.)
Woman: No. I believe you could. I just don’t believe IN you.
PRS: This dog that I’ve come to acquire. Is there a breaking mechanism to get its loyalty?
Woman: Yes. But it will take (bites her bottom lip) some discipline. I have heard that you know how to do that…very effectively.
(She grabs a belt from behind her and pops it in front of Ricky….She ties it to her hip and puts the other side of the belt around Ricky’s belt loop in the front. Ricky looks with a cocked eyebrow).
Woman: You have to show the dog who’s the alpha. Make him…follow you this close. Everywhere. Make him be what you want him to be…a follower of your power. So that way when you move and he doesn’t (Drops to her knees) He’ll look up and know that you’re still in…control.
PRS: (Undoes belt) Well now, that was…that is a very good idea. So I keep him close to get his understanding that I’m the Alpha and he will become part of my…Pack???
Woman: But of course. He’ll be family, and loyal to the end. But some dogs never grasp the concept. Open the door once and they’ll run forever, never to return. They were untrainable, lost to their own faculties. Dogs like that are a danger to society as a whole, and never reach these cages. Some of them Mr. Stanton are just far too gone to be saved in the mind, and it’s saddening.
PRS: I do not think that’s the case for the dog I’ve found. I believe that it is trainable and I believe that it can be a valuable asset. I don’t know how close I’ll keep it leashed butttttttttttt nonetheless the visual was….enlightening to say the least.
(The worker slightly smiles as she motions for PRS to follow her back to the front)
Woman: I would like to meet this dog sooner or later Mr. Stanton.
PRS: In due time, in due time. For now, I have to do some breaking and ensure it’s not a threat to anyone in this building. He has done some damage to my car and stuff sooooo it may not be ready for a public introduction just yet.
Woman: Oh, I see. Most wild dogs are not very welcoming to new, more fashionable surroundings.
PRS: (laughs) Ohhhh you could say that again.
Woman: Here’s some advice Mr. Stanton: Be careful. This dog you have, it’s a survivor, and it’s been one for a very, very, long time. Don’t expect to break him overnight. And if you do break him early, consider yourself lucky.
(Driver opens limo door)
PRS: (Turns back to the woman) Thank you for your insight. The building looks great. I know this was short notice so next time I’ll be sure to make proper time for an official visit. Until then, you have my confidence in your abilities. (Closes door and the limo drives off…)
