Alex “Bullet” Carbajal stands in a side hallway at the hotel in Denver, her phone pressed to her ear as she listens to her cousin, Julio Cortázar, talking about recent business developments.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: Yeah, no, I can take the meeting.
Julio immediately starts talking a mile a minute about people he wants to remove from the equation and Alex can’t believe her ears, her face becoming a mask of annoyed rage.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: ¡Hijueputa, Julio, ese caramonda…
Nodding as Julio responds, Alex’s teeth start grinding from the annoyance that always seemed to come when Julio got cocky about things. He’d come to her six months before with a proposition from a supplier in their hometown of Medellín and Alex had brought it to the Club as any good Vice President would.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: Julio…
The call ends and she shakes her head in disgust.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: ¡Hijueputa!
As she slides the phone back into her jeans pocket, the President of the Shieldmaidens MC, Robi Jean “RJ” Mitchell, comes walking up.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: Trouble?
Alex shakes hr head knowing that RJ will probably see through this the same way she always does when Alex tries to blow a problem off.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: Just Julio being Julio.
RJ nods grimly.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: You got it?
Alex nods, almost apologizing as she does so. It never did to disappoint the group den mother in RJ. Alex had already spent her good will with the call at the beginning of May to admit she and her best friend/lover, Shieldmaidens prospect Jackie “Bandit” Layton, had broken the Club’s policy about hard drug usage. Another major incident would probably carry stiffer penalties.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: Yes. I’ll talk to him when we go to Asheville. Keep the heat off and maybe even get him to pull head from ass! If he continues, he will cause Rafa to make him catch a bullet with his teeth!
Hearing the name of the man that basically ran the operation in Colombia's name invoked, RJ just nods almost vacantly.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: We don’t want that, do we?
Alex shakes her head.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: Rafa would send someone much more reckless to negotiate in Julio’s place. We need to make sure that does not happen because if it does, we can kiss this operation goodbye. Juanito would ruin it and probably get himself arrested, to say nothing of the others doing the actual handling. He might even start a war and we would be caught in the middle between Rafa, Juanito and Julio on one side and the Russians and Marcos on the other.
RJ nods grimly again. “Juanito” was Rafa’s nephew, and had already earned a reputation for being a little too fast to develove into violence when it wasn’t necessary. He also had a cocaine problem himself so was almost never in the right headspace to make the decisions he would be called upon to make due to his family position.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: How do we keep Juanito out?
Alex nods, her eyes focused and yet almost betraying a sense of personal worry in the young Colombian woman.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: By making sure Julio knows he must not get himself taken out. Rafa knows how much better suited he is than Juanito but he also will not tell his sister no forever if Julio keeps giving excuses to come for him.
RJ shakes her head.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: Is there anyone else we could get in on this to either help Julio or, of needbe, take his place that is not Juanito?
Alex exhales heavily.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: If it were me making the call, I would slip Julio into hospitality and put NoNo in that seat. Juanito would torpedo the operation just to wave his dick around. NoNo is the smartest guy Rafa has working for him. Julio is ok, but NoNo would be genius about things and only goes for blood if absolutely necessary and even then, sometimes will find other ways.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: You think maybe that’s why it’s not him?
Alex shakes her head.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: He’s not in that chair because he’s from the wrong family. If he was Juanito, Julio would have been retired years ago. If he was Julio, there would be no question who was in charge. Juanito would not be able to get his spot even if his mother wished it. NoNo would find a way to both keep him at bay and placated so he wouldn’t want him out of the way.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: You make it sound like that should be our play, try and get NoNo that spot.
Alex’s teeth start to grind again as she ponders this. Getting NoNo that spot would almost certainly make all of their lives easier, to say nothing of making sure the heat was almost always looking the other way.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: Would make things better.
RJ nods her agreement.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: Do you think it could be done?
Again, Alex exhales heavily as she ponders this question.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: Maybe, if Marcos were to want it and maybe if Julio’s father wished him to help at the resort. Julio was always better as a party host than as an administrator.
RJ nods, smiling as the wheels start turning.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: And Marcos has always valued your input…
Alex looks dead ahead. Would Marcos and Benny go for this?
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: The trick would be getting Marcos to want to work with NoNo while also getting Benny to along with it as the resort. Julio cannot be made to see this as a demotion. If he does, he will complain to his father and then Benny will never go for it either.
Pondering this question as well, RJ finlay nods in acknowledgement.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: And that would mean we probably just started a war at home for them because we got Julio killed and Benny and Rafa would feel the need to wave their pricks at each other, wouldn’t they?
Alex nods at the painful truth.
Alex "Bullet" Carbajal: They would.
RJ nods and then pats Alex on the back.
Robi Jean "RJ" Mitchell: Come on, let’s focus on the match and then you and Bandit can go to Asheville and see how this plays out.
Alex nods in agreement and the two women walk back towards the door and their fellow Shieldmaidens to prepare for their coming match.
