The history is Double Team Ihari would resemble that of their parent, the former Kasumi Otanashi, herself a former tag team wrestler with her older sister Kurumi. The Ihari sisters are second generation wrestlers, born and raised for the business despite their mother’s insistence that they not get involved. As proud as Kasumi Otanashi was to be a part of a successful tag team in professional wrestling, it’s not the lifestyle she wanted for her children.
However, her husband didn’t share the same thoughts. When Kasumi married promoter Daisuke Ihari, never would she have ever realized that he would have designs to raise and produce the next generation of tag team wrestlers in the business that is joshi puroresu.
The sisters were born about five years apart and almost immediately upon the birth of his youngest daughter, Huruka, the dollar signs (or perhaps the yen symbols) were already gleaming in his eye. From a ripe young age, he would sit the girls down and watch wrestling and soon they were hooked, especially when he brought out the tapes of their mother in the ring.
Muriko was always and will always be the bully of the team. She was a terror at school. Not enough to get herself suspended or expelled, but enough that when students saw her coming to their table during lunch, they cleared out and moved to another. So much that when they saw her coming down the hallway between classes, they moved to the other side of the hallway.
Kurumi, on the opposite hand, was the darling of the duo. She was sweet and kind. She had friends that numbered in the multitude. She was the first to help a stranger and the last to say a bad word about anyone. She believed in fair play and attempted many times to get her older sister to change her spots, but to no avail.
While they both started training for wrestling at about the same time, due to her age, Muriko was the first to debut and she quickly earned a reputation for being rough, overly so. She was often disqualified in her matches due to excessive violence towards her opponent, much to her father’s distress. He would plead with her to go out and win, but she just wanted to go out and prove she was the toughest wrestler, not necessarily prove she was the best.
Their father’s only hope lied with the youngest. Huruka, he had hoped, would be the one to mellow out the older sister and get this team on track. It did work for a time. They would work well together and just before it got too rough, Huruka would tag in and bring the violence level of the match down enough that they wouldn’t get disqualified.
The team as a whole was very polarizing as when Huruka was in the ring, the fans would rally because she was the ultimate babyface, especially when in peril. But when the tag was made, the fans quickly turned on the team, booing the older sister who went on a vengeful display of violence after the hot tag.
That’s not the say the dysfunction between them wasn’t successful. They had multiple long reigns as tag team champions but it was "the incident” that led their father to sending them overseas to the United States. But that is for another story.
It was the Saturday before the “Rise Again” show when the sisters arrived. They were met by representatives from Mile High and driven to a hotel to stay for a few days until they could find a place to settle in. Muriko was not at all impressed with the accommodations, but Huruka was thrilled to be in a new country. She even was attempting to learn some English, though not catching on as quickly as she would like.
They sat through the entire show, watching from start to finish and enjoyed it -- though Muriko just sat in her chair with her arms across her chest. Huruka would nudge her sister and point to the ring and bounce in her chair, giddy with glee.
It would be the next day when they were told of their first match on Episode 20 of Mile High Wrestling against a group who call themselves Stigma. After a couple of Twitter exchanges, Mile High Wrestling cameras caught up with the Ihari sisters to get their comments on their upcoming match with Stigma, subtitled for the language barrier, of course.
Muriko would speak first and it seems the older sister only has one volume and that would be loud. “I don’t know what the fuck a Stigma is but I can promise you one thing! This is our debut for Mile High Wrestling and we are not going to lose to the likes of you, creepy people. You talk in short words and think you are scary, but when we get into the ring I will show you who the scary one is. We did not come from Japan to lose to a second rate team and we refuse to be beaten.”
“Oh hi hi!” chimes in Huruka as she tries to get into the camera shot. “We are happy to be here in the United States and especially to wrestle for a company Mile High Wrestling! I am very excited to meet many of the wrestlers like the Space Lord and Mr. Marshall. Emily the Barf Girl and Ass Lady Vebbins and especially my favorite wrestler, Miss Bullet!” In a quieter voice, she leans in close, “I’m so sorry you lost your match...” Muriko frowns at her sisters as the younger one continues. “I hope when we get into the ring with the Stigma people that we have a good and fair match and that the best team would win! Please fight fair and we will have the best match on the show!”
Muriko has had enough and shoves her sister aside, “Bring the fight, team Stigma! I will not go easy on you and my sister will no go easy on you. We plan to win, one hundred percent. We will beat you and then beat Sports Entertainment and then the Maidens of Shield and then the Foundation until we get our change at the championship. We will be the best. We will beat the best to be the best. Stigma team, you are going down!” To the camera person, she looks and adds, “Now get the fuck out,” and storms off, slamming the door behind her leaving her sister alone who looks after her disappearing sister and then back to the camera and smiles brightly, “We will see you. Number 20! Double Team Ihari is coming!”
From beyond the distance, “Shut up!” which startles Huruka, who turns back and quietly waves goodbye to the camera with a big smile before the scene fades.
